Before we discuss about Robotic Rectus Diastasis Surgery , let’s understand what is Rectus Diastasis is and what is Rectus Plication is.

What is Rectus Diastasis?

Rectus diastasis is known as abdominal separation or abdominal muscle gap or abdominal midline weakness. It means the belly sticks out because the space between the left and right belly muscles has widened and this causes the Bulge.

It is more common for ladies after pregnancy or from one with yo yo weight problem or other causes that is idiopathic / genetic and It can happen to anyone at any age group and to man as well.  This is a medical condition and usually covered by medical insurance.

What is rectus plication?

It is the repair of the rectus diastasis.

What rectus diastasis leads to and why rectus plication helps

The rectus abdominal muscles play an important role in the stability of the spine. Depending on the degree of the rectus diastasis, it can lead to a vicious posture, spine problems, back pains and aches, slipped disc, pelvic floor muscle dysfunction  etc.

Rectus plication can effectively restore  the connection  of the muscles in the midline of your abdomen  and the function of the core muscles, providing a balance between the anterior and posterior abdominal wall muscle and also can improve the cosmetic appearance of the abdomen.

Who are the suitable candidates for the robotic core muscle repair

It is type of minimally invasive surgery that does not target removing any skin. It is a type of tummy tuck for those without any over redundant skin (excess skin) or for those who do not want to have any long scars in the abdomen but need to repair the core muscles.

What are the other options?

There are other types of options beside the robotic technique to repair the rectus diastasis. The other option is open method surgery. It can be with a vertical incision in the midline of the abdomen from the 5 cm above and 5cm below the umbilicus and this leaves a quite obvious vertical scar.

The other method is the abdominoplasties – mini abdominoplasty and endoscopic abdominoplasty. This method will leave a scar in the bikini line depending on how much skin to remove; it will be the length of the scar.

The other method  is the full abdominoplasty where the large amount of lower abdomen skin will be removed and tighten , leaving bikini line scar from  right to left side of the hips and a new belly button.

What are the advantages of this Robotic Surgery?

Robotic surgery is becoming the gold standard of Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) in many surgical fields.

MIS bring advantages of minimal tissue trauma, lower rate of infection, faster recovery, and smaller scars and this is important in the field of plastic surgery where scars are undesirable and can compromise the final aesthetic results.

How is the scar like for Robotic Surgery ?

There are 4 incisions for this robotic surgery and the scars are between 0.5 to 1.5 cm long.

What is the recovery time

For this robotic surgery, a minimum 2 night’s stay is required. Patient is advised not to move around too much for the next 1 to 2 weeks is recommended. There may be some slight swelling and bruising that will disappear within the next few days.

Stitches are removed usually around 7 to 10 days. To return back to playing tennis or golf or running marathon , it is recommended to start after 4 months.
