What is Fat transfer?

Fat transfer, also known as autologous fat transfer/lipo-filling or fat grafting, is the process of using the patient’s fat to increase the fat volume in another area of their body.

The fat is harvested or extracted via liposuction, depending on the volume.

The harvested fat will go through a centrifugation process to separate and remove unwanted components such as blood, water, or oil. The remaining fat is then injected into the breast.

What if I am too skinny?

We rarely reject a person for a fat transfer procedure. Fats can be located around your thighs, arms, abdomen, and hips.

If you are too skinny, we will advise you to try to gain some weight and maintain it for a while before coming for the procedure.

How much bigger can I get?

You can expect to increase by around half a cup size and no more than a full one. Initially, the breast looks full with minimal swelling, but the size will reduce slightly after a while. To reach the desired size, a few sessions might be required.

Pre-Surgery Screening

The patient must have sufficient body fat and a normal mammogram, and no family history of breast problems.

The Advantage

  • Uses your own body fat rather than using an implant which is a foreign body, with no worries of any downsides of any leakage or capsular contracture or changing in the future.
  • No incision cuts.
  • Shapes the body and removes the fat in areas you do not want.
  • Feels softer as compared to an implant.

The Disadvantages

  • It may take a few sessions to get the full results.
  • Part of the fat will be absorbed, and the breasts will lose the fullness in volume in the first 3 to 4 months, but the remaining fat will stay forever. If you gain weight, the transplanted fat cells will grow and shrink if you lose weight.

What is the recovery like?

Patients usually go home the same day and can return to work within the next 4 to 5 days, depending on individuals.  There may be some light swelling and bruising.

Depending on the individual, physical exercise can be resumed after 2 or 3 weeks.

Helpful Methods for Breast Fat Grafting

Currently, the two more popular devices for aiding the fat grafting process in breast augmentation:

Brava System

It is an external tissue expander worn for several weeks before and after the fat grafting. The BRAVA device is like a bra with plastic cones for cups. The cones put suction on the breast area to expand the tissue and create a matrix for the fat to live in.

BRAVA works by placing a gentle amount of negative pressure on the entire breast. This negative pressure stretches the breast with its internal tissue. The skin and all the underlying tissues down to the chest wall expand to create a fertile matrix allowing large volumes of fat to be transferred and survive.

You may be required to wear the BRAVA device for 4 or more weeks before the fat injections and for several weeks after. The body may reabsorb the injected fat, and you may lose some or all of the breast volume over time.

Enhancement System

The Enhance system is worn like a bra and uses gentle suction to grow new breast tissue cells. The system must be worn for at least 1-2 hours a day for around 8 weeks to see results. The maximum wear time is around 3 hours a day for 12 weeks.
