Children are often teased about them at school, often resulting in much unhappiness and distress. However, ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, can be performed to reposition the ear, in order to  create a more natural appearance.

Ear Surgery Ear surgery or Otoplasty, can be performed on adults, as well as children 5 years of age and older. By the age of 5 years the ears are almost at their adult size. Having surgery as early as possible is also a good way to prevent future taunting. The procedure is done to alter the size and shape of the ears, and set protruding ears back, so that they are closer to the head. Otoplasty can be performed under local or general anesthesia, and is usually done in the surgeon’s office. The incision for the operation is made in the natural crease of the ear, so that the scar is not easily visible. Surgery involves removal of cartilage and skin, and the ear is reshaped to achieve the desire effect.

After Ear Surgery In order to protect the ears during the recovery period,  a head wrap is put in worn. The wrap is usually replaced with a band for another 4 weeks. Full recovery takes about 6 weeks. If your ears are causing you embarrassment, then you may want to undergo ear surgery to correct any ear-related complaints you have.
