My Child went to school and wants Ears Fixed!

It is the holiday period, and the new school term is just weeks away. Somehow we see parents bringing in their child to see a plastic surgeon for the problem – the ears.

Every parent wants the best for their child, and we tend to see more parents seeking help from plastic surgeons for their child’s prominent ears. Prominent ears, also known as bats ears, can be surgically treated to alter the ear’s size and shape or set so they are closer to the head. This procedure is known as otoplasty.

According to Dr Marco, it is relatively common to see these cases coming into his clinic before the child starts school or during the school holidays.

Dr Marco mentioned that parents would bring their child in for a consultation, and their mindset is to book the date for the procedure. However, Dr Marco always insists on speaking to the child and asking what the problem is and if it is troubling him/her.

male child with hands behind his ears

“It is important to know what & how the child wants and feels, and if they are being teased or bullied by friends in school or even called names due to how their ears look. This kind of negative effects can affect the child psychologically and affect their well-being in school and life. No one wants to be call names and being teased”.

Dr Marco commented that some of the children really want to have the otoplasty procedure. They would even be willing to listen to instructions and cooperate during the procedure, which takes around 45 minutes, done in the clinic under local anaesthesia. The child will participate in taking the photos before the procedure and during the whole entire procedure. They are even vocal about if they feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure! Of course, you need to keep them informed of what you are going to do to them.

Dr Marco emphasised that he will assess those who can have the procedure under local anaesthesia during the consultation. Otherwise, it has to be done under sedation or general anaesthesia in the day surgery centre or hospital.

The downtime for the procedure is about 3 days with minimal swelling, and the final stitches will be removed around 10 days. Dr Marco advises children to wear an elastic binder (like those sweatbands that tennis player wears or hair bands for ladies) for at least a month or two, depending on individual cases. It’s also best used during sleep time.

Selecting Your Plastic Surgeon

If you dream of having plastic surgery done and think you know everything you need to be aware of, think again.

After searching through multiple websites, reading hundreds of online forums and blog pages, browsing all sorts of magazines, and asking everyone who is the best plastic surgeon, do you get the final answer you’re looking for?

Searching for the right plastic surgeon is, perhaps, like how a lady will take her time to choose and inspect her very first Birkin.

Choosing the right plastic surgeon requires you to know a few important pointers.

  1. Credentials and Memberships

Do your research! Have you done your homework and know what qualifications they have? Do you know where they were trained, the type of training they have undergone, including their specializations? Do you know how many successful cases they have done?

In Singapore, the plastic surgeon must be registered with the Ministry of Health and a member of the Singapore Association of Plastic Surgeons.

On top of local registrations and accreditations, the surgeon should be registered as a member of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and also the International Confederation of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgeons. Memberships in these organizations require peer acceptance based on following a strict code of conduct for quality, safety, and ethics.

The plastic surgeon should also be attending and presenting papers at international conferences regularly, as well as keeping up to date with the latest techniques to ensure the best outcomes for their patients.

  1. Experiences and Reputation

These certifications and memberships don’t account for everything. For a plastic surgeon, experience should be on top of what you should look for. Ask the doctor about their experiences, including the number of successful cases they have done. Check their reputation in the industry.

  1. Facility Use and Hospital Privileges

A competent plastic surgeon knows the type of facility to use for specific procedures. They must have accreditation with a hospital where they can perform more complex procedures.

  1. Thoroughness and Rapport

During the consultation, get all the needed information for your procedure. The surgeon should give you all your answers and allow you to clear any doubts. They should ensure that you have understood and know what you are undergoing and all potential risks, complications, and expected results.  If you do not feel comfortable with your surgeon, do not commit to the surgical procedure. Continue your search.

Choosing the right plastic surgeon will take time. If you do not feel comfortable after you have gone to the selected one, don’t settle! Do not jump into what is convenient for you and make a hasty decision.

Brazilian Butt Lift by Dr Marco

Surprise surprise! We have now entered into the golden era of having the perfect round and perky buttocks. Think Nicki Minaj and the internet breaking photo of our favourite Kim Kardashian, albeit their bottoms being extreme examples of this beauty ideal. This phenomenon is getting popular all around the world especially in countries that has some of the most beautiful beaches, where thongs and bikinis are daily apparel for women. There are some natural ways to ensure having attractive looking buttocks such as squats, lunges and yoga, but what happens if these no longer deliver the results you desire? Fear not, the answer is Brazilian Butt Lift!

The Brazilian butt lift is a type of butt augmentation procedure which results in youthful, prominent, and perky buttocks to give off a more sensual body profile. This procedure changes the size and shape of the patient’s buttocks by fat grafting or injection. Patients will have to undergo liposuction to remove fat from their abdomen, hips and thighs which is then processed and re-implanted into the buttocks.

Mostly, patients, both men and women have symptoms such as flat buttocks, sagging buttocks, asymmetrical buttocks, disproportionate buttocks or even massive weight loss that results in a change in the shape of the buttocks. The procedure will bound to add the curve you used to have, and restore your youthfulness in your buttocks.

Is it safe?

Brazilian butt lift uses fat-grafting, where fat is taken from other areas of the same body to be injected into the butt, it is generally safe. Although there are risks involved with this process, they can be minimized when performed by a qualified surgeon. Typically, butt lift surgery results in a 2-3 weeks of recovery time for most patients and during this period of time, patients will feel a little sore at the bottom region. However, in majority of the cases, you will be able to hit the beaches in your thong bikini after the recommended recovery period and show off your newly acquired butt.

How long do the results last?

After the fats are injected into the buttocks, some of them will be reabsorbed by the body and naturally eliminated. About 60-70% will stay in the buttocks and these fat cells that stay in the area will survive and live in the buttocks for the rest of time. As this is not an implant, the fat cells behave the same way as other fat cells in the body. Therefore, results may vary depending on weight fluctuations. To attain the longest lasting results, be prepared to maintain the weight you had before the procedure rather than lose it.

We don’t blame you if you are already feeling excited at the prospect of having that youthful body once again. Don’t be surprised if many more people are going to be stealing glances off your butt as you strut along the beach with a glass of mojito in your hand.

Is it true that “A needle a day keeps the frowns away”?

All you need is a Botox® treatment once in a few months, depending on your needs. Many patients see improvements within several days after the injections, but the results will usually last about three to four months, at which point the muscle action will gradually return. After which, the lines and wrinkles will also reappear gradually.

One good news is that over time, these repeated injections would cause the lines and wrinkles to become less severe as the muscles are trained to relax.

Will I enjoy long-term results if I have regular Botox® injections?

Some research found that getting more Botox® before it has completely worn off is definitely more effective for wrinkle reduction. It is all about timing and getting Botox® treatments at regular intervals. Dr Marco will be able to customize for you a long-term wrinkle reduction/prevention programme that caters especially to your skin type and treatment needs. This way, you can ensure every dollar is maximised for the best outcome from each treatment. If you want, our team will also give you timely reminders when it is time for your next Botox® injection!

What if I run into financial difficulty and cannot do regular Botox® injections?

It is not advisable to acquire Botox® treatment if you are running into financial difficulty. With or without Botox®, the basics of good skincare should still be followed: hydration, a healthy diet, regular exercise, limited sun exposure, avoiding smoking, getting adequate sleep and reducing stress. These are basic guidelines for good skincare. It will ultimately help your skin to look better twenty years from now. Botox® injections will be a bonus to reverse ageing. The balancing of cosmetic benefits versus the cost of Botox® injections is a personal decision. Speak to Dr Marco so that he can better advise you on the benefits of Botox®.

What if I decide to stop Botox® treatments?

Each individual will experience the effects of Botox® differently. This includes ceasing the treatment after repeated Botox® programmes. Upon stopping Botox® treatment, the areas where you got Botox® injected will gradually return to their original state, and you will experience more freedom in movement in those areas.

Botox® does not stop ageing. Naturally, the older you get, the more wrinkles you will develop. A misconception amongst patients is that stopping Botox® treatments results in a worse look than before. This is not true. Your look will only revert to your pre-treatment days. You can always opt to go back to Botox® later if you choose to do so. Seek professional advice before deciding on Botox® treatment programmes.

Thread Lift: Is it worth it?

Thread lifting is a fast and effective face-lifting technique that aims to rejuvenate your face. With the advancement of today’s plastic surgery procedures, undergoing such procedures no longer requires you to go through surgery. Thread lift is perfect for people who do not have the time to spare for a full facelift in Singapore but still want a more youthful face. It is also great for a temporary quick fix for important occasions, such as weddings and parties, that leaves you with no time for a proper facelift. You can achieve it within a couple of hours, with results lasting from a few months up to a year!

Apart from using Botox to relax hyperactive muscles or dermal fillers, which fill up lost volume over the ages, there are also skin-tightening lasers and radio-frequency treatments. These procedures fight the drooping of the skin, reversing the effects of gravity and collagen degradation.

LUNCHTIME FACELIFT

Thread lift is also widely known as the “lunchtime facelift” as it can be performed in less than an hour with minimal pain and almost no downtime. It has an instantaneous effect and is popular because, within your lunch hour, you will be able to look more youthful. When compared to Botox or dermal fillers, it has a more lasting effect. Thread lifting provides a more subtle change, giving people a refreshed look without long scars and downtime.

WHAT TYPE OF THREAD LIFT CAN I GO FOR?

Thread Lift treatment areasThread lifting can be done on the brows, laugh lines, cheeks, and jaw. Seeking professional help from an experienced plastic surgeon will allow for a more accurate and precise pre-planning and application of anaesthesia.

During the procedure, your surgeon will insert a thread with cones under the skin to help lift the skin. Much like suspension cables, they hold up the skin in place and provide a supportive structure that defies the effects of gravity and aging. But before that, your surgeon will mark the proper entry point, direction, and exit point. This is why the plastic surgeon’s training and experience determine how the final result will turn out.

A procedure with such benefits will not affect your daily life much, giving you ample room for flexibility.

WHAT SHOULD I TAKE NOTE OF AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

The procedure is generally safe, with only minimal side effects, such as slight bruising, aching, and slight swelling in the affected area. These normally resolve within the week and are not too much of a concern. Other complications include infection, nerve injuries, extrusion of the thread, and visibility of the thread under thin skin (rare but possible). The incisions made for the entry and exit points are tiny and heal without unsightly stitches.

Should Mastopexy be Combined with Breast Liposuction?

A mastopexy (breast lift) with or without implants is often the foundation of a Mummy Makeover, a term used to describe surgery of the breasts and the body in a woman who has had children and is looking to improve her body form after pregnancy.

But what about breast liposuction? Should breast liposuction of the lateral pole of the breasts (side of the breasts) be involved when what you want is just a mastopexy?

BREAST LIPOSUCTION SHOULD BE DONE TOGETHER WITH BREAST LIFTS

This procedure removes the fat on the side of the body, creating a breast boundary and reducing upper back fat. Adding liposuction to a breast lift does not increase its risks or the complexity of the surgery, but it will cause additional bruising and swelling at the sides of the breasts and the upper arm area. Note that these temporary effects are typically worth the improved results.

HOW SAFE IS IT TO COMBINE MULTIPLE PROCEDURES AT ONE TIME?

It is safe to be under general anesthesia while a certified anaesthesiologist is present every second of the surgery. SAFETY is always my topmost concern for all my patients, and it is equally important for their spouses, family members, and loved ones to know they are in safe hands when they undergo plastic surgery.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECOVER FROM SUCH A PROCEDURE?

This differs based on the size of the area involved, the patient’s lifestyle, and other factors. A consultation with Dr Marco will provide you with accurate advice according to your personal health history. Generally, less strenuous activities such as easy walking and basic household activities around two days after the procedure is alright. This light activity will prevent blood clots and sores and help you transition smoothly to your regular routine.

Dr Marco will continue to monitor your progress and give you full instructions to help speed up your recovery. You may go home the same day if you wish, but most patients take 1-2 weeks off from work. You may need to wear an elastic bandage or surgical bra for a short period of time, and you can expect some soreness and bruising for a few days. Inflammation may last for weeks but gradually subside. If you are uncomfortable, you can take over-the-counter or prescription medication during the recovery period.

Is It Acceptable For Teenagers To Undergo Rhinoplasty?

More than almost any other age group, teenagers undergo extreme peer pressure. Teenagers’ confidence can depend largely on their physical appearance and how the world sees them.

For many teens, a nose that is too large or misshapen can be the source of teasing, embarrassment, and discomfort. Teenage rhinoplasty helps correct the nose’s appearance while maintaining the proportional balance of a younger face, providing emotional support to an extremely sensitive age group. It’s usually an outpatient procedure done either under general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia plus sedation.

WHEN ARE TEENS READY FOR PLASTIC SURGERY?

Before contemplating teenage rhinoplasty, a teen’s nose must be fully-grown. Girls often achieve full growth at about 14 to 16, while boys may take longer. If nasal reshaping is attempted earlier, before full growth is attained, the remaining growth distorts the new look.

Psychologically, it is one of the biggest factors a surgeon considers before allowing a teen to go “under the knife.” For anyone planning to undergo plastic surgery, a healthy mental attitude contributes to a positive outcome. More so for teenage rhinoplasty.

Your rhinoplasty surgeon must be certain that the teen considering getting nasal work done has a realistic expectation of what their nose will look like post-surgery and understands the effects it will have on their life.

WHAT ARE SOME ISSUES THAT CAN BE IMPROVED WITH RHINOPLASTY?

Rhinoplasty can help with:

  • Removing a hump on the nose
  • Straightening the bridge
  • Reshaping the nose’s tip
  • Increasing or decreasing the size of the nostrils
  • Correcting the nose after an injury
  • Opening breathing passages
  • Making the nose bigger or smaller

Nose jobs can be done to change how you look or for medical reasons. For example, some people may need nose surgery to repair a problem with the cartilage that divides one nostril from the other. Others may just want to make their nose smaller.

WILL PEOPLE NOTICE THAT I HAVE DONE A NOSE JOB?

Dr Marco takes great care to craft noses that enhance their appearance. He prides himself in achieving extremely natural results that will leave people wondering, “what’s different?” The best compliment following rhinoplasty by Dr Marco is when patients are told they “look great”, but the observer cannot pinpoint what has been done.

By using a closed technique, there won’t be any visible scarring. If an open technique is used instead, there will be a scar at the base of the nose between the nostrils. This incision will likely fade over time. During your consultation, Dr Marco will discuss the technique most appropriate for your unique nose.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE RHINOPLASTY?

Before getting a nose job, teens and their parents or guardians should discuss extensively with the surgeon and weigh all of the risks and benefits. Honest communication is a must for the success of the operation.

A couple of consultations are needed before surgery to ensure that the teen is mature enough to handle it, is doing it for the correct reasons, and has realistic expectations about the results. For instance, thinking changing your nose will change your whole life and make you more popular is not realistic.

Remember, beauty comes from the inside.

In-office Lunchtime Liposuction

It isn’t easy to lose fat, especially with a busy schedule right here in Singapore. Finding the time to hit the gym or preparing healthy and light meals every single day may not be feasible either. And even if you are consistent and do succeed in losing some weight, you might find that problem areas of stubborn fat just won’t go away no matter how hard you try.

That is when lunchtime liposuction can help. Designed to suit men and women with busy schedules, the lunchtime liposuction promises to eliminate these stubborn pockets of fat effectively while minimizing the time you spend recovering. It is essentially a quick fix.

LUNCHTIME LIPOSUCTION

Lunchtime liposuction is a type of syringe liposuction designed to treat small problem areas of up to 100cc. It is done under local anesthesia and can be done right in our fully accredited Singapore liposuction clinic, which is MOH licensed for in-office liposuction*.

The fat harvested can be used for fat grafting in small areas such as the hands and lips, or collected over multiple sessions to assist in a natural breast augmentation Singapore.

Patients can see immediate results and can usually return to work the next day with minimal post-op pain. Some patients even come in every week to treat different problem areas of stubborn fat!

*However, do note that not all clinics in Singapore are licensed to perform this procedure. As it is still an invasive procedure, do ensure that your plastic surgeon’s clinic is accredited by the Ministry of Health for in-office liposuction. Your health and your life should always be the top priority.

BENEFITS OF LUNCHTIME LIPOSUCTION

  • liposuction singaporeQUICK FIX:
The lunchtime liposuction is a quick fix to eliminate any pockets of stubborn fats that is resistant to exercise and diet.

  • COST:
As compared to traditional liposuction, the lunchtime liposuction can be done directly in the office, and there is no need to pay for a hospital stay. In addition, there is also no need to pay for an anesthetist as the procedure is done purely under local anesthesia.

  • MINIMAL DOWNTIME:
The lunchtime liposuction is an outpatient procedure and is effective and quick. Patients can typically return to work within a day and return to normal exercise within a week.

  • MINIMAL DISCOMFORT:
During the procedure, there is no pain due to the local anesthesia. After the anesthesia wears off, patients feel only aches and pain similar to those after a vigorous workout.

  • PERMANENT RESULTS:
Results of the liposuction are permanent. The fat that is removed via liposuction does not reappear or regrow. Any weight gain after the surgery may be seen in other parts of the body, so it is important to maintain a healthy weight through exercise and diet for the best results.

Plastic Surgery To Look Like Celebrities

While many people choose to have plastic surgery to restore a function or to enhance a feature they are not happy about, some people decide to have surgery for impractical reasons—they want to undergo plastic surgery to look like their favorite celebrity.

But that is not what plastic surgery is about. The goal of plastic surgery is not to make you look like another person; it is to make you look like you—an improved version of you.

CELEBRITY PLASTIC SURGERY

There is a woman who used plastic surgery to look like Jennifer Lawrence, a man who wanted to look like Justin Bieber, and of course, the French couple who underwent multiple surgeries to look like Barbie and Ken, the plastic dolls.

In all honesty, none of them actually do turn out like the celebrities they love. And that is because replicating a celebrity, or anybody, requires having hundreds of tiny details exactly right. It must be the right skin tone, skin texture, facial feature position, and even the right bone structure! Having even a single aspect different will compromise the final result.

French couple who underwent multiple surgeries to look like Barbie and Ken, with the plastic dolls

BETTER REASONS FOR PLASTIC SURGERY

celebrity plastic surgery singaporeWhile it is not possible to look 100% identical to your favourite celebrity, it is definitely possible for plastic surgery to achieve a close resemblance! You can definitely use certain aspects of a celebrity’s features for inspiration.

If you want fuller lips like model and celebrity Kylie Jenner, you can opt for a lip injection involving hyaluronic acid. Alternatively, for a more permanent fuller lip, fat grafting can be used.

Or if you want a sculpted waist with a fuller bottom like celebrity Kim Kardashian, a Brazilian Butt Lift is the way to go. This procedure takes fat out from your waist, hips, tummy, and thighs by liposuction and injects it into the buttocks to create an hourglass figure.

If you envy model Kate Upton’s full breasts, you may choose to undergo breast enhancement (implants or fat grafting) and/or breast lift procedures.

While having these celebrities’ features as inspiration for plastic surgery procedures won’t give you the exact feature after surgery, the results will be better. You will have features proportional to your unique body type—these enhancements will be suited to fit you.

Basically, plastic surgery can help enhance your beauty or improve your existing look without changing your identity. Plastic surgery should boost your confidence and self-esteem and make you feel better about yourself as a whole.

CELEBRITY BEAUTY TRENDS MAY HELP TO MAKE YOU EVEN MORE BEAUTIFUL!

So long as it is not Michael Jackson’s nose that you are after, beauty trends set by hot celebrities may indeed bring out an even more beautiful you! Of course, it is of utmost importance to me that my patients have realistic expectations of what plastic surgery can or cannot achieve. While you may not look 100% identical to your favorite celebrity after plastic surgery, these procedures can definitely be a way to help emphasize your beauty to create the best possible you.

Plastic surgery is about bringing out the most beautiful you without losing what makes you, you.
